Matthew A. Spivey (“Matthew”) started practicing law in Atlanta, Georgia after graduating from Emory University School of Law in 2006, with honors. Since returning to Tennessee in 2012, Matthew has been recognized by the Tennessee Bar Association through selection into the Leadership Law Class of 2014, as well as being named one of the Top 40 Lawyers Under 40 by the National Trial Lawyers and other organizations from 2014 through 2021, and a Mid-South Rising Star by Super Lawyers from 2016 through 2021, and a Mid-South Super Lawyer from 2022 through 2024 in the area of Criminal Defense. In 2017, Matthew received the Massey McGee Trial Advocacy Award from the Tennessee Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers (“TACDL”). Matthew has previously served on the Board of Directors for both TACDL (2016-2020) and the Northeast Tennessee Section of the Federal Bar in 2017 to present. Matthew is licensed to practice law in Georgia and Tennessee.
J. Matt King (“Matt”) started practicing law in Kingsport, Tennessee after graduating from the Appalachian School of Law in 2006. Born and raised in Kingsport, Matt initially began his private practice in 2007, managing a successful solo practice handling family law, criminal law, and general litigation issues. In January of 2013, Matt joined Rick and Matthew in the current firm. Matt is a member of the Tennessee Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers (“TACDL”) and other organizations. Both Matt and Matthew have attended the Tennessee Criminal Defense College intensive trial program hosted by TACDL.
Richard A. Spivey ("Rick") started his practice in the late 1970s after graduating from Cumberland School of Law and practicing in Birmingham, Alabama handling civil and commercial litigation. However, in 1979, Rick found his true calling by returning to his hometown in Kingsport, TN, and starting a practice specializing in criminal law, domestic/divorce work and general litigation. Rick has been named a "Fellow" by the Tennessee Bar Foundation for his accomplishments. Rick is licensed to practice in Tennessee.
